Data collection for statistic purposes with numbers of, circumference, diameters, lengths, heights and positions, can basically be done the same way, independant of if working with trees in the forest or fish in the sea. Our instruments and applications designed for forest measuring work often overlap other areas of operation, for example fishery research.

A big threat for our common future is global warming. The global warming process is partially due to release of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, from burning fossil fuels into the atmosphere. Plants in general, and our large forests in particular, take in carbon dioxide, convert it to sugar (photosynthesis), and release oxygen. Since plants can store carbon dioxide in their tissues, they can be used to reduce carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.

What is a good control system? This question can have different answers, depending on who you ask it to. Hazard trees, borderline trees, tree limit, line clearance, assessment of hazards... Trees are not only of good - they can actually present serious risks for people and property! Regular, preventive risk assessment and utility vegetation maintenance is necessary to reduce the safety risks involved. Falling trees are one of the most common causes for electricity breakdowns, and especially so when the weather makes it tough to handle service interruptions. Hard wind and heavy rains, ice and snow are all typical reasons to why trees fall over.

Power lines need to be mainained and controlled on a regular basis to ensure reliable and secure delivery of electricity to the consumer. Apart from keeping the area clear from large and high trees and other vegetation, the line's height and delta height need to be monitored. The Delta Height can be measured with a useful function included in the VL5 and L5 instruments.

Distance measuring is a central application in most forest measurement jobs: to measure radius of sample plots, distance to trees for height evaluation, distance to border trees when using a factor gauge, etc. Depending on your standards and accuracy demands, the methods and means to measure these distances will vary. In the forest, you will find all from pure estimations, tapes, and thread meters, to ultrasound and laser. Haglöf Sweden offers several solutions to cover the requirements. 

How to get good and accurate measurements of tree heights in all types of forests is one of our main concerns at Haglöf Sweden.

Use your Haglöf Sweden DME, Vertex IV or VL5 instruments with the "reverse prism" function on point samples, sampling a full spectrum of basal area factors (BAFs).

Apart from pure monetary values, there are many reasons to why it is a good idea to measure individual trees. You wish to measure your forest to know how well a particular tree is doing in a specific stand. How it competes with other trees and how well it grows in relation to other trees. To determine this, the method most commonly used is to measure the stem diameter. The diameter often correlates with the tree’s biomass or wood volume.
